Universal Waste

Universal waste is Low risk high volume hazardous waste generated by a variety of people. This waste has three categories: CRTs, thermostats, batteries and lamps (fluorescent tubes, discharge lamps, mercury vapor lamps, batteries (not auto), and mercury thermostats. This waste must be disposed of properly.

More examples of Universal Waste are:

  • Mercury thermostats
  • Mercury switches
  • Mercury thermometers
  • Batteries (single use and rechargeable)
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Sodium vapor lamps
    Non-empty aerosol cans
  • Pressure or vacuum gauges
  • Dilators and weighted tubing
  • Rubber flooring that contains mercury
  • Novelties (singing greeting cards, flashing athletic shoes, flashing jewelry)
  • Consumer electronic devices
  • Cathode ray tubes (CRTs)

How to dispose of Universal Waste

Under California’s Universal Waste Rule, beginning February 9, 2006, residents must dispose of these wastes at a household hazardous waste facility or take them to an authorized universal waste handler.

The City of Moreno Valley and the Riverside County Waste Management Department host Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Events that will accept universal waste at the City Maintenance Yard located at 15670 Perris Blvd. in Moreno Valley. Universal Waste Disposal Guidelines:

  • Take all universal waste to an authorized facility for disposal
  • Do not dispose of universal waste in the trash
  • Label or mark universal wastes containers to identify their types
