Mayor Gutierrez Urges Governor Newsom
to Protect Education from Budget Cuts

Education Cited as Critical to Economic Recovery

For immediate release: May 21 2020

In a series of letters to Governor Gavin Newsom this week, Dr. Yxstian Gutierrez, Mayor of Moreno Valley, urged him to protect education from potentially devastating funding cuts proposed to help close the state's coronavirus-caused budget deficit.

"I understand that Governor Newsom and the Legislature have to reduce spending and that education accounts for the largest chunk of the state budget," said Mayor Gutierrez. "But that's because it's the state's highest priority, and it's going to cost more to provide, not less, due to the pandemic. Getting students back to school is also key to parents being able to get back to work and to rebuilding our economy."

Mayor Gutierrez specifically referred to Moreno Valley and Val Verde unified school districts and the estimated $45 million and $21 million cuts, respectively, that they face under the governor's proposal.

He also noted the negative effects of proposed cuts to the state's After School Education & Safety (ASES) grant, which the City administers on behalf of MVUSD and VVUSD to provide the Think Together after-school program, serving 4,000 students at 43 elementary and middle schools. The Mayor said parents have to know their children are safe before they can go back to work.

Finally, Mayor Gutierrez explained that Moreno Valley College (MVC), which currently serves more than 15,000 students, faces a projected loss of $10 million and a resulting potential elimination of 185 course sections across all disciplines, including its job-training pathways. The Mayor also pointed out that demand for community college increases in times of high unemployment.

"The cost of safely providing a world-class education has unavoidably gone up due to the coronavirus pandemic," the Mayor said, "but it has to remain the state's highest priority."
